Blendbogen

Ein dekorativer Bogen, der keine Maueröffnung überbrückt, sondern der geschlossenen Wand nur vorgeblendet ist.

Old Town Hall, Toruń

One of the most recognizable buildings in Toruń is the Old Town Hall, located in the city’s main square. This impressive brick building acquired its present form through systematic extensions carried out during the Middle Ages. Built on a square plan, the town hall once served a variety of functions: judicial, administrative, penitentiary, and even commercial. Today, it is the main seat of the District Museum in Toruń, which houses and presents historical works of art and artefacts from various periods, ranging from the Gothic era to the 20th century. A distinctive feature of the building is its 40-metre-high tower. Today, the tower serves as a viewing platform and offers what is arguably the best view of Toruń’s Old Town. The climb to the top is not particularly challenging.

St. John’s Church, Toruń

In the city panorama viewed from the opposite bank of the Vistula, the silhouette of Toruń’s Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist stands out most prominently. It is the main church of the diocese and the oldest building in Toruń, with its walls having begun to be constructed as early as the first half of the 13th century. The church makes a strong impression not only from the outside – its interior features a rich collection of furnishings, including the exceptional Gothic Altar of St. Wolfgang. The cathedral tower also houses a bell weighing more than 7 tonnes, cast over 500 years ago, which can be viewed for most of the year.

St. Mary’s Church, Toruń

In one of the corners of the Old Town Market Square stands another fine example of Brick Gothic architecture – St. Mary’s Church. Although more minimalist in appearance, it is impressive in its dimensions. The three small turrets on its gable, decorated with intricate tracery, beautifully reflect the spirit of the medieval era. The church’s interior is richly adorned with wall paintings and other outstanding examples of sacred art.

St. James Church, Toruń

At Toruń’s second market square – the New Town Market Square – stands a particularly beautiful Gothic church, now known as the Sanctuary of St. James. The church is located along the famous Camino Polaco pilgrimage route and features remarkably rich architectural details for a medieval building. Viewed from the outside, the eye is drawn to the flying buttresses and decorative pinnacles, instantly evoking the Gothic era. The interior is also well worth exploring, offering another opportunity to admire medieval art in its purest form.
