The
Güstrow Cathedral is a wonderfully preserved example of the northern German Brick Gothic style. Lovers of architecture will notice that both the Gothic and Romanesque movements left their mark on the architecture of the cathedral. The surrounding town fortifications – that also encompass the Mecklenburg region's oldest school – and the Wallerstein manor's court also attest to the particular sort of flair displayed by architects during the Middle Ages.
Visitors to Güstrow have always headed straight for
St Mary's parish church, the church's powerful yet delicate steeple shaping the city's skyline. After a fire devestated the city in 1503, the Brick Gothic basilica was rebuilt and renewed, and further renovations at the end of the 19th century were to see the church transformed into a three-aisled hall church. The church's interior, featuring a valuable collection of artworks dating to the 16th century, has been preserved; the view from the church's steeple of the city and its surrounds has charmed generations of travellers.
The many themed tours on offer in the city means a visit to Barlachstadt Güstrow is worth it for travellers. The following tours are available all year round in the town:

Beyond Brick Gothic
One of Güstrow's the most prominent landmarks is the town's castle. Built as a residence for the Dukes of Mecklenburg in the 16th century by reknowned Italian architect Franz Parr and completed by Dutch builder Philipp Brandin, the building is today reckoned to be one of the most important Rennaissance buildings in northern Germany. Of particular interest is the stucco ceiling of the castle's ballroom, an artfully decorated parlour and the collection of ceremonial and hunting weapons to be found inside the building. Visitors will also enjoy the castle grounds, which have been recontructed according to the Renaissance-era plans.
